Overview Of Blepharoplasty Surgery

Several factors including aging, sun damage, smoking, obesity, stretching can cause eyelids to droop resulting in sagging. It results in an individual looking tired or appearing older than his/her age. Blepharoplasty is a cosmetic surgery to restore the firmness of eyelids and give eyes a youthful appearance. During this procedure, excess skin and/or fat on the eyelids is removed, restoring the youthfulness of eyes.

What Are The Different Techniques In Blepharoplasty Surgery?

On The Basis Of Function

  • Functional Blepharoplasty: If the patient is unable to see properly due to drooping eyelids which is decreasing the field of vision, then a functional blepharoplasty is indicated to help them see better again!

  • Cosmetic Blepharoplasty: Cosmetic eyelid surgery is a procedure that is done to improve the eyelids when they are droopy or sagging. This rejuvenates the eyelid and the area around it helping individual to look younger and rejuvenated.

On The Basis Of Location

  • Upper Eyelid Surgery (Upper Blepharoplasty): Upper blepharoplasty can be done for functional reasons as well as for cosmetic reasons. Excess skin and/or underlying muscle with or without underlying fat pads are removed.

  • Lower Eyelid Blepharoplasty: Lower eyelid surgery is a popular cosmetic procedure that eliminates fat bulges and extra sagging skin around the lower eyelid to help improve one’s appearance.

Who Is A Good Candidate For Blepharoplasty Surgery?

The best candidates for the procedure are physically healthy, psychologically stable, and have realistic expectations for the results of their surgery. Most people who undergo blepharoplasty are over 35 years old; however, it can be done in individuals under 35 years of age if needed. Chronic illnesses and smoking can impact the healing process and recovery. Quitting smoking is recommended before surgery.

What To Expect At Blepharoplasty Consultation With Dr. Balvant Arora ?

During initial consultation at Arora Plastic Surgery and Med Spa, Dr. Balvant will discuss any health issues or medications you are taking. He will check if there’s anything else in the way like allergies, and herbal supplements the individual is taking. He will examine eyes, eyelids, brow position and also assess tear production. You might also be asked to provide any relevant information from an ophthalmologist about recent eye exams.

Dr. Balvant Arora will talk about your goals and expectations from the surgery.

He will go over any question you may have and will go over everything in detail from the expectations point of view and allay any concerns and fears.

What Is The Procedure Of Blepharoplasty?

  • Depending on the extent of the procedure, blepharoplasty surgery is usually completed from one to three hours. If blepharoplasty is done on all four eyelids, then Dr. Balvant Arora usually works on the upper lids first before moving on to the lower ones.

  • The incisions lines are marked depending on the laxity of the skin in the upper eyelid and under the eyelash in the lower eyelid. Incisions may extend beyond the outer corner of your eyes.

  • Once the incision is made, the skin is separated from underlying muscle, then the muscle and/or excess fat is removed. The incision is then sutured with very fine stitches.

  • For the lower eyelid, the incision is made below the eyelash, the skin is separated from underlying muscle, protruding fat is then trimmed. The bulky muscle is also trimmed as needed. The excess skin is then trimmed and the incision is then closed.

  • After the surgery, an eye ointment is applied over the suture lines and cold compress is placed. One may feel some discomfort when the anesthetic wears off, but taking pain medication as needed helps to control or decrease any discomfort. If you feel severe pain or there is swelling or visual discomfort, then contact Dr. Balvant immediately.

What Factors Affect The Cost Of Blepharoplasty?

If the blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery is done simply for aesthetic reasons, the procedure will not be paid for by insurance. However, if there is significant reduction in the visual field due to excess skin on the upper eyelid, then, insurance may cover the upper blepharoplasty. The following factors have an impact on the overall prices of blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery:

  • Fees for the doctor
  • Cost of the surgical facility
  • Cost of pre-surgical tests, and post-surgery care
  • Type of surgery performed and the technique utilized

The cost of the surgery will be determined during the consultation based on evaluation of the individual.

Benefits Of Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery helps to restore younger look and rejuvenates the eyes and surrounding area. It also helps restore the visual field.

Recovery After Blepharoplasty Surgery

  • Keeping the head elevated and using cold compresses helps to reduce swelling and bruising. (Bruising varies from person to person - it reaches its maximum during the first week and generally lasts usually upto two weeks.)
  • Apply the ointment and eye drops as instructed and follow up.
  • There may be excessive tearing, sensitivity to light, which is temporary and may last for a few days.
  • The sutures removal is done within a week after surgery. The swelling and discoloration around the eyes decreases gradually and you’ll begin to feel better.
  • After two or three days, you should be able to read and also watch television. However, you will not be able to wear contact lenses for approximately two weeks, as they may feel uncomfortably tight for a while.
  • In a week to ten days, most people feel ready to go out in public (and back to work). By then, depending on the rate of recovery and the doctor’s instructions, you may be able to conceal the bruising with makeup.
  • When you go out, don’t forget your sunglasses and a sunblock as needed.
  • Limit your activities for three to five days and avoid more strenuous activities for around three weeks. It’s critical to avoid things that raise your blood pressure, such as bending, lifting, and intense sports. Also avoid alcohol in the postoperative period.

What Are Complications Associated With Blepharoplasty Surgery?

  1. Eyelid surgery by a qualified plastic surgeon is very safe and there is low risk of serious problems. Even so, there is always the possibility of complications, including bleeding, infection, scarring need for further surgery, wound healing problems or an allergic reaction to medications. Meticulously following instructions both before and after surgery, the risks of developing complications decreases significantly.
  2. Temporary blurred vision, puffiness at the eyelid corner, and mild asymmetry in healing are among the minor issues that sometimes develop following blepharoplasty.
  3. Tiny whiteheads following suture removal are possible after; however, they may be easily eliminated with a tiny needle.
  4. Some patients may find it difficult to close their eyes when they sleep following surgery. This should resolve but in rare cases, it may need further surgical intervention.
  5. Ectropion, or a pulling down of the lower lids, is another uncommon complication. Further surgery may be required in this situation.

It’s important to note that all of these dangers and problems are unusual, occurring rarely. Dr. Balvant Arora goes to great lengths to avoid any risks or complications. The procedure and the risks associated with it are discussed in detail during the consultation.
